Disclaimer: These are just some books that I have found profitable in my walk with the Lord. They are merely my own suggestions.
The Cross and Christian Ministry by D.A. Carson
Dr. Carson’s book on the cross and Christian ministry has greatly influenced my thoughts about ministry and how the cross is always central to ministry.
Desiring God by John Piper
Desiring God is a great book discussing the affections of believers. Here Piper unpacks what it means for man to truly “glorify God by enjoying Him forever.”
The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer
This book was instrumental in God calling me to ministry. The clarity and reverence with which Tozer explains the attributes of God will leave you wanting to know God more.
Holiness by J.C. Ryle
Bishop Ryle’s book will spur you on to holiness and sanctification as he directly deals with your heart.
The Mortification of Sin by John Owen
Here is a book that will cut you to the heart as Owen masterfully explain how Christians can put sin to death in their life.
Knowing God by J.I. Packer
Knowing God is a classic book which has inspired many people. Packer demonstrates the essentialness of not just knowing about God but knowing God.
Humility by C.J. Mahaney
Mahaney does a great job of teaching why humility is important in our lives and how we can defeat pride.
The Cross Centered Life by C.J. Mahaney
Mahaney gets to the heart of the Christian walk, to have our eyes focused on the cross.
The Discipline of Grace by Jerry Bridges
What I love about Jerry Bridges is his ability to clearly communicate the doctrines from God’s Word and to also teach their practicality.
Stop Dating the Church by Joshua Harris
Stop Dating the Church is a must read for all Christians. Josh Harris convincingly defends the importance of the local church. I believe every Christian needs to hear this message.
The Gospel According to Jesus by John MacArthur
MacArthur stressed the importance of Lordship salvation and the importance of our daily submission to Him.
Living by the Book by Howard Hendricks
Living by the Book opened my mind as to how to go about studying the Bible in depth. I still use the techniques set forth in this book.
The Valley of Vision edited by Arthur Bennet
This book of Puritan prayers is one which frequently lifts my soul in worship to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
The Reformed Pastor by Richard Baxter
The Puritan, Richard Baxter, provides excellent insight for all pastors. I have heard C.H. Spurgeon had his wife read this book to him every Sunday afternoon.
The Deliberate Church by Mark Dever
Pastor Dever puts forth the model of a church that does things with a purpose. This is a great book for leaders in the church as Dever gives practical examples of why his church do what they do.
Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hand by Paul David Tripp
If you ever wonder how God could use an imperfect person like yourself for ministry, read this book. Paul David Tripp tells how God can use us in spite of our weaknesses and blemishes.
Shepherding a Child’s Heart by Tedd Tripp
Arguably the best book on parenting. Tedd Tripp literally gets to the heart of the issue.
When People are Big and God is Small by Edward Welch
Fear of man is a common sin many deal with. Ed Welch does a great job of showing how we are to fear the Lord.
Growing Up Christian by Karl Graustein and Mark Jacobsen
This book is a must read for anyone from age 15 to 25 who has grown up in a Christian family and in the church. Not that others can’t benefit from this book, but this is the target audience. I found this book personally challenging and convicting as I was one who “grew up Christian.” I don’t know of another book that addresses this topic, and I don’t know if a book could do a better job of addressing the topic. I hope this book will produce lasting generations of mature Christians.
